NUTLEY: MARTHA STEWART’S HOMETOWN
Nutley, once the home of Martha Stewart and Annie Oakley, has a small town character that has changed very little of the last few decades. The town enjoys a unique picturesque suburban existence in close proximity to New York City. It is conveniently located near the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, Route 3 and Route 21. Bus service to New York City is also available from the DeCamp Bus line. New Jersey Transit runs a train from Clifton’s Delawanna station, a 40-minute ride.
The parks in Nutley are considered the "crown jewel" of the Essex County park systems. The 13.5-acre Memorial Park, on Passaic and Vreeland Avenues, is the largest of the many parks in Nutley. It has a playground, walking and bike paths and a pond for fishing and ice skating.
The town of 29,000 prides itself in maintaining a high level of conservation. The latest surveys list the Township as maintaining over 10,000 trees and over 100 acres of recreational land. The town claims that no home in Nutley is more than one half mile from a park or playground!
Restaurants are also plentiful in Nutley, especially those specializing in Italian cuisine. For entertainment, many residents attend community theater productions at the Nutley Little Theater on Erie Place.
Like Verona, property taxes and home prices in Verona tend to be more on the affordable side.
The Nutley public schools district has five elementary schools. John H. Walker Middle School is for seventh- and eighth-graders, and Nutley High School has about 1,300 students in Grades 9 through 12. The high school, on Franklin Avenue, offers honors and Advanced Placement courses, along with an academy of fine and performing arts.
